Period accessories for sash windows
Sash windows are objects of beauty. Their imposing height and classic, understated lines add an elegant symmetry to any room, and create a formal frame both for the view into, and from, your room.
A classic feature of many period properties, primarily of Georgian architecture and Victorian architecture, they will often signpost Grade 1 listed and Grade 2 listed building status. This explains why owners of properties with original sash window features have committed to sash window restoration and display their windows proudly.
Undeniably handsome and grandiose, there is the danger of appearing ‘underfurnished’ if not properly accessorised. Here are a few tips for displaying your period sash windows to their very best advantage, whilst not diminishing their impact.
Get dressed, go vintage
Decorative pelmets – carved, gilded, covered in period fabric or painted, depending on your taste – often create a great upper border to a sash window. If you’re design-daring and looking for a real talking point, you may want to consider purchasing a period fabric pelmet from a specialist dealer. These would need to be attached to a pelmet board to ensure they didn’t sag or ruche. Antique pelmets will often have been sewn from silk and involve embroidery, so will be fairly delicate and demand careful handling and maintenance.
Wood is good
An alternative to these perishable fabric pelmets comes in the form of carved wooden ones, often with scalloped or fluted edges. These can be extended vertically at either end to create a lambrequin, or short draping.
Protect and perfect
Finally, it’s always a good idea to install a simple, plain roller blind (cream always works well). This can be rolled up and hidden behind the helmet when not required, and then pulled down when needed, and is great for creating additional privacy, protecting furniture from sun fade and damage, and providing an extra layer of insulation.
Dressing your sash windows with period or antique accessories grants even greater prominence to a classic architectural feature, whilst also providing practical benefits, the perfect synthesis of form and function.
