After installation comes maintenance
Whatever property you live in, care and upkeep is always going to be important. Any building will fall into decay with crumbling plaster, rotting wood, damp and other issues if it is not properly maintained.
Old and strong
Yet, contrary to what many people think, an older building with Georgian architecture, Victorian box sash windows or those in conservation areas, are often the sturdiest.
The craftsmanship that was typical of buildings built 2 or 3 centuries ago was often of a high standard, using strong, resilient materials.
Conservation projects are now key to preserving these older buildings, and ensure they are renovated in a sympathetic style, to match their heritage.
Knock on wood
Wood that is exposed to the elements needs to be primed with the knots properly treated, sanded, washed and a coating applied to putty. Sash window frames are no exception if complete sash window replacement is not being undertaken and the wood can be preserved.
Box sash window repair
The window frame can be stripped without damage to the original frame or features. It is not necessary to use harsh chemicals and care can be taken with the original glass if it is being retained.
It is not always a good idea to remove paint as it can also remove historical elements. Exterior paintwork can be upgraded at regular intervals which will keep the joinery intact, especially as this is exposed to the outside elements and likely to get a battering in winter and summer.
One of the important aspects to bear in mind with sash window renovation is that manufacturing methods have changed since the days of old. Once windows from period properties have been destroyed, there is no chance of replacing with quite the same historical value.
