Slim Double Glazing

slim double glazing

By using and maximizing the latest glazing technology available on the market, it is now possible to install Slim Double Glazing into most existing single glazed windows.

This was previously impossible to due to the overall depth of most standard double glazed units. Advancements in glazing technology have now changed making it possible to manufacture ultra thin Double Glazed Units.

Slim Double Glazed Units use smaller spacer bars and small cavities with the same insulating U -Values as standard double glazing.

These U-Values comply with Building Regulations and are comparable or better than U-Values obtained by standard units with much wider cavities.

U-Values are a measurement of how much heat can be retained by a given material, a lower U-Value means a higher insulation and more heat is retained.

Slimlite Double Glazing are the leading manufactures of Slim Double Glazed unit's. Which we supply and fit in all our fabrications.

Another key factors why we use Slimlite is units can be faced putted using linseed putty.Which is not possible on a standard double glazed unit. This adds to the authenticity of the window.

Slimlite glass has also been featured on the Channel 4 program Grand Designs.Click on link below to read about Kevin McCloud report on this unique product.

Calculating heat loss

Here is a simple calculation which shows the benefits of installing Slim Double Glazing compared to single glazed glass. Single glazed glass has a U-Value of 5.4 which is very high.

Glass Width x Glass Height x U-Value x Temperature difference from Inside to outside temperature = Heat Loss

So if for instance we are calculating 5.4 U-Value single glazed unit and the Internal temperature is 21 degrees and the outside temperature is 3 degrees with glass size 300mm x 300mm then the calculation would be as follows:

0.3 m x 0.3 m x 5.4 U-Value x 18 =8.74watts/hour heat loss

Now the same calculation but for a same sized Double Glazed Unit with a U-Value of 1.6

0.3 m x 0.3 m x 1.6 U-Value x18 =2.59watts/hour heat loss

We install a varied range of double glazed units with U-Values from 2.0 - 1.5 depending on customers’ requirements.

Condensation - Double Glazed Units

Condensation in the main is caused by drop in temperature usually at night.

Depending on the amount of moisture contained in the air, condensation will occur if there is a significant drop in temperature and the air reaches its dew point, which happens when the temperature drops and the air is unable to hold the moisture and deposits it on the coldest object first, normally the window glass.

Opening a window is the easiest way to clear morning condensation.

For instance the single glazing in a window will be approximately the same temperature as it is outside.  If the room is heated with an outside zero or cold temperature this causes a constant convection where the warm air contacting the cold glass will drop from the window at approximately two meters per second, causing a constant heating versus cooling or continual heat loss which is expensive, apart from the noticeable draught.

Slim Double Glazed Units with a U-Value of 1.9 or above will effectively slow down the dew point being reached if at all.  The inner pane of the double glazed unit is always warmer than the outside pane in normal conditions, therefore the internal drop in temperature is considerably slower with the insulation of the double glazed unit.  Increased insulation is the answer to reducing expensive heating costs.

Sound reduction

Reducing noise is one of the many reasons that people opt to double glaze their homes.

All Slimlite Double Glazed Units come with manufactures sound reduction rating. A given window's STC is based on average noise reduction performance across the range of frequencies.

Manufacturers guarantee

Slimlite Double Glazed Units are high performance insulating, constructed using Low-e glass with warm edge spacer bars.Cavity's are filled with Krypton or Argon gas.All units come with a 10 year manufactures guarantee.
